Clinton Tops the Democrats in Iowa Despite Dwindling Lead
The latest poll by the Des Moines Register has placed Hillary Clinton as the top Democrat in Iowa. She edged out Bernie Sanders by 7 percent in an important state for the Democrats.
Which candidate would you vote for?
- Hillary Clinton – 37%
- Bernie Sanders – 30%
- Joe Biden – 14%
Clinton held a strong lead in Iowa in all of her previous polls. In each of those polls, she scored over 50 percent of the vote. Now, she finds herself struggling to convince voters to choose her over the more politically attractive Sanders, who is focusing his campaign on a grassroots movement for worker’s rights and free education.
“These numbers would suggest that she can be beaten,” said Steve McMahon, a Virginia-based Democratic strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns dating to 1980.
In the latest set of head-to-head polls, Clinton beat all of the major Republican candidates, but she didn’t poll as well as Joe Biden, a potential presidential candidate that hasn’t announced his campaign.
If Clinton fails to capture the attention of voters, she will continue to suffer in the standings and bleed out votes to Sanders. While Sanders is an independent candidate, he has taken up the Democrats as his party in order to make a presidential run possible.
