Trump Holds Tiny 2 Point Lead over Clinton Nationally
The latest general election poll by the LA Times/USC Tracking has placed Donald Trump 2 points ahead of Hillary Clinton.
Which presidential candidate would you vote for?
- Donald Trump – 45%
- Hillary Clinton – 43%
Another poll, the same results. This week has seen Clinton and Trump trade the lead numerous times, depending on the company responsible for the poll. As you would expect, Trump continuously won Republican leaning polls, while Clinton won those that leaned towards the Democrats.
None of these numbers will matter come Monday. Both Trump and Clinton will showdown in the first presidential debate and it will provide the two candidates with an opportunity to show the American people why they deserve to be the next president.
Clinton should be able to outperform Trump at the debate, but there are still glaring questions about her health and her overall ability to last through an arduous 4-year presidency. In addition, the majority of voters do not trust Clinton and if Trump can take advantage of this, he may be able to win over new voters.
For Trump, he will need to come to the debates ready to talk about policy. His usual vague talking points will not do and if the debate moderators hold him accountable, he will struggle immensely. If Trump can come to the debates and drive home his usual points with strong reasoning and hit Clinton by proposing something more left leaning, he should be able to escape the debates without damaging his reputation.
