The latest Rasmussen Reports poll has revealed that the Republican Paul LePage has pulled ahead of his Democratic challenger Mike Michaud. The poll asked 930 likely voters who they would vote for if an election were to occur today. 41 percent of the voters chose LePage, while 40 percent chose Michaud. In a distant third was the independent candidate Eliot Cutler with 16 percent of the vote. 1 percent of the voters liked a different candidate and 3 percent were undecided.
In the previous poll, Michaud had the lead with 43 percent to LePage’s 39 percent. The race is close and it is difficult to say who will win the election.
47 percent of the voters see LePage as a favorable candidate, while 53 percent say the same about Michaud. Both candidates are recognizable to their voters.
Overall, LePage had a mediocre approval rating. 45 percent of the voters approved of him, while 52 percent did not. Only 2 percent of the voters were undecided for this question.
For government spending, 44 percent of the voters trust LePage and 34 percent Michaud. For taxes, the numbers are similar. 42 percent support LePage and 35 percent Michaud.
On the topic of social issues, 43 percent of the voters chose Michaud and 37 percent LePage. Both candidates were very close on the topic of ethics. LePage received 38 percent of the votes to Michaud’s 36 percent.
Of those polled, 90 percent were certain to vote. The party split for this poll was 30 percent Republican, 35 percent Democrat, and 35 percent other.
This state is likely to remain a toss-up, as there is no clear-cut winner.
